Urgent Dental Trauma & Acute Pain Management
Severe toothaches, knocked-out teeth, and acute fractures require rapid, gentle clinical intervention. Follow our immediate first-aid steps below and call our direct hotline for expedited chairside intake.
Immediate First-Aid Protocols
What to do right now before reaching our clinic.
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth (Avulsion)
A knocked-out adult tooth can often be successfully replanted if handled correctly within 60 minutes.
Hold the tooth exclusively by the white crown. If dirty, rinse gently in cold whole milk or saline. If possible, gently slide it back into the gum socket and bite down on a clean cloth.
NEVER touch the delicate root fibers. NEVER scrub or scrape the tooth. NEVER wrap it in dry tissue paper. Store it in cold milk or saliva and reach us immediately.
Severe Throbbing Toothache or Facial Swelling
Acute throbbing pain that keeps you awake at night usually indicates acute pulpitis or a periapical dental abscess requiring immediate decompression.
Rinse with warm salt water to flush out food traps. Apply a cold ice pack to the external cheek to reduce inflammatory swelling. Take standard ibuprofen.
NEVER place an aspirin tablet directly against the gum tissue next to the hurting tooth—this causes severe acid chemical burns to the soft mucosa.
Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Tooth
Trauma from sports, falls, or biting on hard objects can fracture enamel and expose sensitive internal dentin or nerve tissue.
• Save any fractured tooth fragments in clean water or milk—our clinic can often bond the original fragment back invisibly.
• If the edge is sharp, cover it with a small dab of orthodontic wax or sugarless chewing gum to prevent tongue laceration.
Lost Crown, Dislodged Bridge, or Broken Denture
Keep the dislodged restoration safely in a clean container. Do not use household glues (like Fevikwik or Superglue) which are toxic to living pulp tissue and ruin the margins. We can disinfect and re-cement it properly with dental resin.
